Memories
This week one of my father's best friends passed away suddenly. After hearing this sad news, I began thinking of my trip to Nigeria in August 2013 where I was able to meet him and his family. Other memories of the trip began playing in my mind. From the shopping at the local markets to celebrating my great-grandmother's 105th birthday in the remote village where my father was raised, each memory reminded me of something very important: In Nigeria, death causes people to celebrate. Obviously, like everyone else, Nigerians will mourn the death of loved ones. However, after that time of mourning, Nigerians celebrate the life, legacy, and love of the one that passed away. Tears of sadness quickly turn to tears of joy as everyone remembers how they touched that person's life and how that person touched their life. That is what I love about my people. Even in times of sadness and difficulty, we always find joy and peace.
