A Beam of Hope

On January 25, 2015, Miss Colombia Paulina Vega won the title of Miss Universe. An accomplishment that has taken Colombia nearly 56 years to regain since our last win in 1958. That is not to say that Colombia has not been close to winning the title in the past. In fact Colombia has had four first runner-ups and 18 semi-finalists since 1958. The "Miss Universe" Pageant even though seen as sexist in other cultures is something that Colombians hold in high regard. Winning the title emphasizes our pride and joy in our heritage and country. This win also shows us that other nations have put our dark past behind them and appreciate the hard working and emerging country we have become now. It is not only a time of celebration

in Colombia but also in my family.
